How to Wash Swimwear & Underwear + Care Tips

Learning the best way to wash and care for your swimwear and undergarments is the best way to extend the life of them. Now, after you've received your SpiBoy garment, you want to know how to keep it looking great. Wash your apparel following the recommended fabric care instructions, located on the inside of your garment. This will ensure you get the best care and life out of your garments.

 

How to Hand Wash Swimwear

Before washing, turn your garment inside out to prevent damage to the fabric. Hand wash in cold water, using a mild detergent. Rinse in cold water, removing all saltwater or chlorine from the fabric. Lay your garment flat or hang dry them away from direct sunlight. This helps to keep the colors bright.

Things to avoid doing

Do not iron, tumble dry or dry clean your garment. Steam iron if needed, no heat. Do not store when wet, roll or fold when wet. Avoid contact with rough surfaces to prevent damage to the fabric. Caution! Sunscreen lotions and tanning oils may stain fabric.

How to Hand Wash Underwear

Some types of underwear like lace and mesh are delicate and should not be machine washed. Hand washing these types of garments is the best way to clean and protect the delicate fabric.

Before washing, fill your sink, tub or bucket with cold or warm water (depending on the washing instructions, located on the inside of your garment.) Add less than a nickel size amount of detergent and work into a light lather. Add garment to the soapy water, making sure it’s fully submerged, let pre-soak for 5-15 minutes. To clean gently scrub your garment between your fingers in a circular motion, carefully washing the whole garment. Once clean remove garment from soapy water, and rinse in cold water. Continue rinsing until all the soap is gone and water runs clear. 

Things to avoid doing

Do not ring out your underwear because this will stretch and possibly damage the fabric. Instead, lightly squeeze the water out if needed. Starting from the top light squeeze to the bottom, making sure all the water is squeezed out. Lay your garment flat on a towel or drying rack to air dry. Do not iron, tumble dry or dry clean your garment. Steam iron if needed, no heat. Do not store when wet, roll or fold when wet. Avoid contact with rough surfaces to prevent damage to the fabric. Caution! Fabric softener or bleach may damage or stain fabric. 

How to Machine Wash Underwear

Not all undergarments need to be hand washed. More durable fabrics such as cotton or poly-spandex can safely be washed in your washing machine. Read and follow the care instructions, located on the inside of your garment. Reading the care instructions helps to determine whether your underwear should be machine washed or hand washed.

Before washing, turn your garment inside out to prevent damage to the fabric. To remove stains, pre-treat the stained area before washing, and let it sit for 10 minutes. Once ready, wash garment on delicate cycle, in cold water with a gentle detergent. When done, remove garment from washer and place in a tumble dryer on the lowest heat setting. Air drying is the best way to dry undergarments, to help keep them looking good and last longer, but if needed use a tumble dryer on a low setting. If you prefer to air dry, lay your garment flat on a towel or drying rack to air dry.

How to wash underwear?

We recommend machine washing in cold water with like colors, avoiding bleach and fabric softeners.

Should underwear be washed separately?

Washing your underwear separately from other garments can minimize fabric friction, and help avoid tears or rips caused by fabric caught on buttons or zippers.

What temperature should you wash underwear?

We recommend washing your underwear in cold water with mild detergent. Avoid too hot water, as it can set stains, stretch fabrics and fade colors.

What detergent is best for washing underwear?

What’s considered the best detergent is up to your personal preference, however for cleaning underwear, we recommend mild or gentle.

How to remove stains from underwear?

To remove stains from underwear, pre-treat the area before washing with a stain pre-treater or light detergent, and let it sit for 10 minutes.

How to wash cotton?

Cotton is the most widely used type of fabric in underwear thanks to its durability, softness and superior moisture absorption. Cotton underwear is machine washable, and can also be hand washed.

Separate lights from darks, and wash separately. Machine wash in cold water on gentle cycle with mild detergent.

How to dry cotton?

Microfiber

Microfiber fabric is made of synthetic material, making them silky-soft, stretchy and quick-drying. If needed, air drying is recommended.

How to dry synthetics?

We recommend absorbing excess water with a towel, and hanging garment to dry. Avoiding heat drying it can damage synthetic fabrics.

How to wash lace, mesh or silk?

Silk, lace and mesh see through fabric should be washed delicately by hand. Wash in cold water with gentle detergent. Agitate the item in the water, rinse in cold water. Avoid use of washing machines, as it will damage fabric.

Absorb excess water with a towel, and hang the garment to dry.
